Equally monumental in concept and performance, Projektor (2017) by Dušica Dražić and Wim Janssen is an installation consisting of a bronze replica of the projector model Iskra NP-21 onto which 35mm colour film is projected, depicting the process of its own making. Every component of the projector is faithfully cast in bronze.
The sculpture is a material and non-material homage to the Yugoslav industrial era, kinofication, handmade skills, which today is perceived as a strange object – a technological relic – of a state and an era long gone. A monument to a medium and a material, their superior characteristics in a counterpoint to the contemporary evolution towards virtuality of film and cinema.
The transformation of film and technology is in the very core of the process we observe in line with the implications of the digital change. Therefore, perhaps this last manufactured projector in the world might be the utmost point of reflection of the materialist-technological shift which is meant to bring fundamental economic and user-related change.

Dušica Dražić (www.dusicadrazic.com) is an artist, born in Belgrade, currently living in Antwerp. Dražić searches for spaces of irregularity, difference, flexibility, intuition. In her work she explores their transformation and rethinks them at the level of cultural continuity, symbolic irregularities and individual actions. She looks for, works with and collects traces that show how culture is constantly being negotiated, redefined and transformed.
Wim Janssen (www.wimjanssen.be) works with technologies and functions of audio-visual media. This takes form in media installations, videos and films. Often, his works are translations of one medium into another. He currently lives and works in Antwerp.
Projektor is exhibited in Tobačna 001 in Ljubljana, on 25FPS – International Experimental Film and Video Festival in Zagreb and in the Salon of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade with the support of Flandria State of the Art.
