The Museum of Contemporary Art is pleased to invite you to the promotion of the monograph Goranka, dedicated to photographer Goranka Matić, and to the pre-premiere screening of the feature-length documentary film Goranka (90 minutes), directed by Boris Miljković.

The representative and richly illustrated monograph Goranka, featuring texts and nearly one thousand photographs, was prepared by Nebojša Grujičić and Una Popović, designed by Borut Vild, and published in a joint co-publishing venture by RTS Publishing, Službeni glasnik, Društvo ljubitelja popularne kulture Popbooks, Galerija Novembar, and the Museum of Contemporary Art. The monograph received the ULUPUDS Award for Publishing Endeavor of the Year at the recent Belgrade Book Fair.

At the book promotion, the welcome speech will be given by Marijana Kolarić, Director of MoCAB. The monograph will then be presented by Nebojša Grujičić (RTS), Una Popović (MoCAB), Predrag Popović (Popbooks), Srđan Šaper (Galerija Novembar), and Boris Miljković (the film’s author).

Following the presentation of the book, a special pre-premiere screening of the feature-length documentary film Goranka, produced by RTS, will take place. Directed by Boris Miljković, Goranka offers an intimate portrayal of the life and work of Goranka Matić, revealing the personal stories behind her iconic photographs through conversations with her.

Goranka Matić (13 August 1949 – 5 January 2025)

Goranka Matić was present on the artistic and photographic scene for more than four decades. Few photographers possess an oeuvre as thematically wide-ranging as hers—from the iconic images of the New Wave and the rock scene of former Yugoslavia, to portraits of the protagonists of Belgrade’s visual arts, literary, film, theatre, and political life in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, to scenes of political and street events of the 1990s, along with her own authorial cycles. The monograph Goranka, which brings together her work, is therefore more than a photo-monograph—at once an artefact and a testimony to an era and to the people who shaped it.

Goranka Matić passed away in January this year, unfortunately not living to see the publication of the monograph she eagerly anticipated and began working on with its editors last year. In 2021, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade organized a major retrospective of her work, Experience in the Crowd (curated by Una Popović), the most comprehensive interpretation to date of her artistic practice—both the intimate, artistic side and the public, social, documentary one. Alongside its participation in publishing the monograph Goranka, the Museum of Contemporary Art will continue to promote the work of Goranka Matić in the years ahead.
