Ana Knežević’s solo exhibition, “Geometry of Void,” emerges from her previous exploration of physical and virtual space, providing a basic framework for further developments in the fields of perception and experience. “Geometry of Void” refers to the transitional space found in the distance/difference between the tangible acknowledgement of clear, existing elements and the immersion of body and senses into the fabricated world of virtual reality. This exhibition introduces an intriguing complexity compared to Knežević’s earlier works, intertwining visual explorations of light and sound spatial installations with VR installations. It concerns the comprehension of energy through tangible and relative spaces, temporalizing form, thereby positioning itself as both the exhibition’s theme and the artist’s conception of the essence of art.

The “Geometry of Void” exhibition comprises three VR installations and two light and sound spatial installations. Knežević showcases the VR installation “Orbital Resonance” (2024) alongside “Magnetic Flower” (2023) and “Sonic Geometry” (2021), which premiered in a physical space for the first time in 2023 at the solo exhibition “Circle of Resonance” at the Culture Hub in New York. Collaborating on the VR installations are experts Alex Lashkhi from Tbilisi and Tornike Suldze for VR Sonic Geometry.

The observer approaches VR works using the Valve Index VR set, which includes laser devices positioned in the corners of the space diagonally opposite each other, forming a spatial grid to assist the user’s orientation in the virtual realm. Goggles and headphones act as receptors. With the joystick, the user can ‘teleport’ from one space to another. The works offer a fully immersive experience, enveloping the observer in abstract spaces. As they view geometric shapes from various angles, a sculptural relationship with light forms, allowing the observer to ‘freely immerse themselves in luminous volumes.’

Ana Knežević (Belgrade, 1976) is an interdisciplinary artist. She creates light and sound installations, drawings, and VR installations. Since 2017, she has been exploring new frontiers introduced by VR technology. She was the recipient of the CultureHub scholarship and residency in New York in 2018, as well as the Pollock-Krasner Award in 2017, the CEC ArtsLink Award in New York in 2012, and the Belgrade Award for Drawing from the Vladimir Veličković Fund in 2009. Apart from Serbia, she has exhibited solo in New York, Boston, Paris, etc. Since 2013, she has been living and working in New York.
